There is no special diet for patients with diseases of the lymphatic system. Under all circumstances those patients should try to maintain or achieve optimal weight, even if it is difficult. A normal well-balanced diet is best. Eat lots of fresh fruit, salads and vegetables. Patients sometimes think that, since excess proteins in the tissues cause the swelling, a low-protein diet should help. This is not the case since protein is needed in the diet to maintain the strength of the connective tissues and prevent them from swelling more! However, excess fat will make the effects of lymphoedema more severe and harder to treat, therefore it should be reduced. You should use vegetable fat instead of animal fat. Your ideal diet should be healthy and therefore, low in cholesterol, salt and calories. For crunchy snacks, go for fresh raw vegetables instead of potato chips.
The diet during your stay in a specialized clinic should not only support the success of the treatment you will get there, but should also increase your self-motivation. Self-motivation is an important part of the therapy and will help you to avoid falling back into your „normal life“ and your old eating habits.
Maintain healthy eating habits and please take care not to overcook your meals. Steaming is a preferable cooking method. Cut down on meat, but include more fish, especially salt water fish, in your diet. It is good to eat salads with your meals, as they are healthy and full of vitamines and do not contain so many calories.
Avoid being overweight, as fat leads to a compression of the lymph vessels and so the lymph flow is further damaged. You must reduce your weight in case of adipositas! Nicotine does not have a negative effect on your lymphoedema, but it damages your health. Alcohol may well have negative effects on your lymphoedema.
